What is our post to donate service?

Our post to donate service is great for donating your unwanted items, especially if you can’t get to one of our local stores to drop off your donation. You can donate tech items, designer clothing, jewellery, records, vintage toys, camera equipment and ornaments.

Donations we're looking for

Your unwanted items can help us fund life saving research - if you no longer need them, please don't throw them away! We are looking for the following items:

technology: tablets, phones, laptops. Discover how to get your phone or tablet ready for donation.
clothing: good quality items, and premium or designer clothing
records: 7", 10" and 12" vinyl records
games: vintage console games (from the 1990s and early 2000s) and board games
shoes: any, so long as they're in good condition!
collectable items: such as coins and stamps
jewellery: any quality pieces you have. Vintage items are especially welcome.
ornaments: any beautiful vases, bowls and decorative items.
camera equipment: cameras, bags, filters and lenses.

What can I send by post? Show

We are especially interested in high quality items such as designer clothing, jewellery, books, vinyl records, camera equipment and ornaments. Each freepost donation can weigh up to 10kg (the same as the carry-on suitcase allowance for planes) and a maximum of 60cm x 50cm x 50 cm in size. If you have something heavier or larger to donate that cannot be split into separate parcels, please contact your local shop to check if they can arrange a local collection.

Can I donate old phones and tablets? Show

Can I send cash or cheques alongside my stock donation? Show

Please do not send cash or cheques through this channel – instead, please visit your local shop to pay these in person. You can also post cheques to our Customer Service Centre. Please note all cheques must be payable to BHF Shops Ltd. Our details are all here. You can also donate directly through our website.

Why do you not provide a bag to post my items back in? Show

What is the best way to pack my donation? Show

If you have breakable items, we’d recommend that you protect them by wrapping them in bubble wrap or newspaper and then placing in a box. Soft items such as clothing or accessories will travel well in a plastic bag such as a black bin bag. A padded envelope will be just fine for smaller items. Those boxes or bags you may have received from online purchases would be ideal to re-use – just make sure to remove or cover up any original labelling.

What if I don’t have anything suitable? Show

I don’t have a printer at home - how do I get a freepost label? Show

That’s not a problem. When you enter in your email address, you will be asked if you want a ‘At home’ label or ‘Collect+ label’. Select that second option and you will be sent an email with a QR code. When you arrive at the Collect+ drop off point the member of staff will scan your QR code and print the label for you and affix to the parcel.

I am already a Gift Aider - how do I make sure these donations are Gift Aided too? Show

When you make your request for a freepost label you can also print off Gift Aid labels which you can complete with your Gift Aid number, name and postcode. Just affix a label to the outside of the parcel. When your parcel is received, our team will record that they have received your donation and you will receive an email from our Gift Aid team. If you have no printer at home, then just use a plain sheet of paper and complete the same details. Please write Gift Aid on the top and securely affix to the parcel.

I’ve posted my parcel but forgot to Gift Aid my donation - what can I do? Show

I’d like to become a Gift Aider - what do I need to do? Show

When you make your request for a freepost label you will have the option to print off a Gift Aid declaration form which by signing you are confirming you are eligible to join the scheme. Place this form inside your donation parcel. Once your parcel is received, our team will register you as a new donor and you will receive an email from our Gift Aid team. Gift Aid provides valuable additional income to the BHF at no extra cost to the donor. More details about the stock donation scheme can be found here.

Sending your donation via Collect+

I’m concerned that posting these items is an added cost to the BHF and I could just drop them off to my local shop. Show

Our Post to Donate scheme was introduced as an alternative way to donate whilst our shops and stores were closed due to Covid-19 national lockdowns. However, it has proved to be a very cost-effective way to receive donations and remains a convenient way to donate for many supporters, especially where there are no local BHF shops.

We’re sorry if that has been your experience. There could be a few reasons for this:

That particular store may not be signed up to this scheme – there are a few exceptions. Please check here for the drop off points which will accept BHF donations.
The parcel may have been overweight or oversized. The courier service will only accept parcels which weigh up to 10kg (the same as the carry-on suitcase allowance for planes) and a maximum of 60cm x 50cm x 50 cm in size
Your freepost label may have expired – they have a shelf life of 28 days once requested
They may be limited for space. Unfortunately, not something we can control but at times they may not be able to accept parcels for reasons of health and safety
